New Report: Swine Immunocastration
We just launched an overview on swine immunocastration, an exciting technology that greatly increases the efficiency of swine production compared to traditional castration. This technology is widely adopted in Brazil, Canada, and Australia but is currently almost entirely unused in the United States. Some highlights include:
Immunocastrated boars maintain the growth and efficiency advantages of intact males through most of the production cycle, improving feed conversion, lean meat percentage, weight gain, and antibiotic use compared to physical castrates.
We estimate that adopting immunocastration offers an average profit of $16 per head due to improved feed conversion, alongside other benefits like a leaner carcass.
Consumer taste panels have found that pork from immunocastrated pigs is indistinguishable from traditional pork, with similarly low rates of boar taint.
Immunocastration offers several health and welfare benefits from bypassing the need for traditional castration. Immunocastrated pigs experience less pain, recover quicker, and require fewer antibiotics in the nursery stage.
